The name given by Europeans to the eastern coast of the Indian Peninsula, It is a corruption of Carimanal కరిమణల్ a smallfishing village about 20 miles north of Madras, which is now vulgarlycalled Coromandel by the English.
- The supposed Sanscrit rootకురుమండలము Kuru-mandalam is plausible, but is wholly unknown tolearned bramins The coast of Coromandel చన్నపట్నపురాజ్యము, అనగావిశాఖపట్నము నుంచి రామేశ్వరము దాకా వుండే రేవు.
- Hamilton says it iscorruption of Choladesam but this is not correct.
